GSAC 2025 - Course of Fire
The Basic Law Enforcement Training Center has provided a new course of fire. As mentioned before the most notable takeaway is the removal of the 25 yard line and the redistribution of the 30 round course into other lines of fire. Students will still have to conduct the box drill from the seven yard line but will not be required to shoot four rounds from the 25 as before.
This no way prevents an agency from making a harder more dynamic course of fire. This is what new academy students will be required to shoot in the police academy.
Remember there are two types of firearms classes. Qualifications and Training. It is important that in addition to the required yearly qualification that each Department / Officer takes time to train. Here are some examples of simple training.
- Reloading and Malfunction Drills
- Work on your reloads, eyes on your target get back into the fight
- Work on listening to your weapon, it will tell you when something is not right. Fix it and get back int the fight
- Ditraction drills
- Have your students read the back of a box of ammo. This simulates reading a DL or processing something on the side of the road with a suspect.
- Randomly they are given a command and have to drop what they are doing, draw their weapon and engage
- Cover Drills
- We take this for granted the difference between cover / concealment
- Shoot to get to cover
- Reload from cover
- Using your angles
- Officer Down Drills
- You have been knocked to the ground draw your weapon and engage a target, reload, clear a malfunction, operate your weapon weak handed.
The list can go on and on, spend just a few hours after qualifications and do something you don't do a lot of.
Most importantly seek out training. Aspire to be better.
