NFA and what is left

A sweeping reconciliation measure—nicknamed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—has recently passed both chambers of Congress and is now awaiting the President’s signature. Packed with tax and budget changes, it also contains some of the most significant updates to the National Firearms Act (NFA) in nearly a century.

What Actually Changed

✅ $200 NFA Tax Gone for Selected Items

Effective January 1, 2026, the $200 excise tax (aka “tax stamp”) will be eliminated for:

  • Suppressors (silencers)
  • Short‑Barreled Rifles (SBRs)
  • Short‑Barreled Shotguns (SBSs)
  • Other NFA weapons (AOWs)

That means no more paying up to $200 per transfer or manufacture of these NFA items.
But—it doesn’t (yet) mean the end of ATF registration or background check requirements for them.

⚠️ Registration & Background Checks Remain

While the tax goes to zero, the forms (Form 1 and Form 4), fingerprints, background check, and ATF record‑keeping stay in place. Full deregulation efforts—via the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) and SHORT Act—were thwarted by the Senate Parliamentarian under the Byrd Rule.

Here are some things to consider.

Items already on Stamps or Trust

Now that the tax is gone now would be a good time to consolidate all your NFA items. Transfer them all into a trust at no cost.

Trade in that ol can OR SBR

Prior if you built an SBR or purchased a can from a Dealer and wanted to trade it in or sell it the buyer, seller or even a dealer, had to pay the $200 tax stamp... not any more. Now a dealer would be able to form 4 the NFA item back to the dealer to be resold to another customer. We are pretty sure this process would be done on paper and would take longer.

Suppressor Demand or Price

This is totally unknown. As a dealer manufacture times were real. If cans were in stock we saw shipping in as little as 20 days but if they had to be made we saw delays up to 4 months. As for the price again, unknown. I would imagine as the demand goes up the cost of the cans will also go up.

I want a can now!

Well go buy one! Purchase your can get it paid for and wait until the new law goes into effect. If you wait, you may miss out on quick return times not only from manufactures but also the ATF as the flow of Form 1's and 4's are sure to skyrocket.

So I can SBR everything?

If you want... Just remember the registration process has not changed and if you "Manufacture" an SBR you can adopt the current serial numbers but other marking is required. None of us want to get jammed up, get with us and we will help you mark your new NFA item.
